Jonathan Veitch was born January 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, CA. He has a successful career history and currently serves as President of Occidental College, the oldest liberal arts college in the nation.
Jonathan was born and raised in Los Angeles. His father, John Sr, was President of a Columbia Pictures production company. He attended Stanford University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature, and Harvard University where he received a doctoral degree in the History of American Civilization. Beginning his career as a professor of English at Wisconsin University, his impressive resume also boasts accomplishments such authoring American Superrealism: Nathanael West and the Politics of Representation in the 1930s. He held an associate professor position at The New School’s Eugene Lang College in New York teaching classes such as American Film and American History, before being named Dean in 1994.
US President Barack Obama put Occidental College on the map as an alumnus, having attended from 1979 – 1981. Other notable alumni of Oxy include Jack Kemp and Ben Affleck. During his time as President, Jonathan Veitch has been credited with the completion of many well-needed renovations. In addition, he renamed the school’s football stadium after alumni Jack Kept (former professional football player and Republican in the House of Representatives). More notably, he is responsible for the installation of a solar PV system, to generate a large portion of the energy supply on campus. He has kept Oxy pleasantly in the public eye and works hard in the prevention of economic related enrollment woes. Jonathan Veitch has made a name for himself and for his work at Occidental College.
